One of the very first gay holiday spots to emerge in Europe, was the resort of Sitges which can be found very close to Barcelona, in Spain. This was one of the first destinations that gay men and lesbians felt they could travel to and not be subject to disapproval from the majority heterosexual crowd.
This resort is well known for being more gay friendly than the majority of other resorts in the world. The nightlife tends to attract this audience, as do the restaurants, bars and cafes in the area.
Sitges developed at a time when the travel industry were starting to catch on to the idea of the Pink Pound. This is a term that is used to describe that fact that gay people usually have much larger disposable incomes and this is primarily down to the fact that there are usually no expensive kids to bring up.
Mykonos and Lesbos, in Greece, are two other popular gay resorts and despite occasional protests and groans from the locals, they are considered to be safe resorts for gay couples to enjoy a holiday together.
One of the ways in which these resorts have evolved over the years, is down to the fact that nowadays heterosexuals are equally enticed by the atmosphere and facilities being offered in these gay resorts. It is not at all uncommon to see people from any sexual orientation group enjoying themselves in nightclubs together and this does make you think that if it can be this way here, why is there so much segregation still elsewhere?
